What to know about R1.
What is Relay R1?
A USB-C cellular card in development for MacBook. Designed to connect your Mac to cellular service without a phone hotspot.
Will it work with my MacBook?
Designed for USB-C MacBooks from 2018 onward, with macOS 12 or newer. Full compatibility validation is pending.
Does it need drivers or an app?
R1 is designed to use macOS’s built-in wired networking. No required driver or app. Final setup and service activation instructions will be published before launch.
Does it need charging?
No separate charging. R1 draws power from your MacBook through USB-C and has no internal battery.
Where will it work?
Where supported cellular coverage and service are available. Launch coverage will be announced before sales open. Connection quality will depend on the network and location.
What will the data plan cost?
Plans and pricing have not been announced. Cellular service is planned through our data partner. Details will be published before launch.
Can I use my own SIM?
Support for customer-supplied SIMs has not been announced. We’ll publish service and activation options before launch.
Can I run AI agents over Relay?
R1 is designed to provide cellular connectivity for agents on your Mac. Keep your Mac powered and awake, with sleep prevention enabled and supported service. Tasks still depend on the tools you use.
What will R1 cost? When will it ship?
Price and shipping date have not been announced. Availability follows validation and FCC authorization.
