Relay is being built to help you send work, join meetings and use the time between places without finding guest Wi-Fi or setting up a phone hotspot. R1 gives your MacBook its own cellular connection through USB-C. Supported coverage and service are required; R1 is still in development.

USB-C MacBooks from 2018 onward, on macOS 12 or newer. Compatibility testing is ongoing.

R1 is designed to use your Mac’s built-in wired networking through USB-C, without a required driver or app. The same port powers it, so there’s no separate battery to charge. Final setup and service activation instructions will be published before launch.

Anywhere you plan to use Relay will need supported cellular coverage and service through our data partner. Coverage and availability will be published before launch. Relay does not promise uninterrupted service or coverage everywhere.

That’s the goal: a connection for your MacBook that does not depend on your phone’s hotspot. You can use your phone for your own calls and messages while your laptop uses R1’s cellular service. Validation is ongoing.

If you already use sleep prevention, R1 is being built to give agents running on your Mac a connection beyond Wi-Fi. Keep sleep prevention enabled and your Mac powered and awake. Relay does not prevent sleep or make local agents run while the Mac is asleep. Supported cellular coverage and service are required; sessions and tasks still depend on the tools you use.
